A Timeless Tennessee Wedding: Battle Mountain

Bride and groom take newlywed portraits at sunset.

There’s something particularly beautiful about a timeless wedding (and I’ll admit I’m partial to Tennessee) —

The way golden light filters through turning leaves, the rich seasonal palette, the inherent warmth of gathering as the air turns crisp. When you’re planning for a larger guest list, these natural elements become your allies. The Hutchinson wedding at Battle Mountain Farm in Tennessee provided a masterclass on planning a timeless wedding while keeping moments of closeness always present.

I’ve noticed that the most successful large celebrations master the art of creating zones, like Summer and Lucas’s wedding. Rather than battling the scale of your guest list, embrace it by creating distinct spaces within your reception. A lounge area with seating invites quiet conversations. A bar setup (or two) or multiple yard games will prevent crowding and creates natural mingling spots. These intentional gathering spots can help your venue feel more like a curated adventure on the way from ceremony to cocktail hour to reception!

We also can’t forget lighting

A key detail that becomes especially crucial as autumn days grow shorter, lighting becomes vital to setting the mood of your event but also to the safety of your guests. This gets discussed more in the article “How to Make a Large Wedding Feel Intimate”, too!)  Instead of overhead lights, try layered lighting to add depth and so much more room for personalization. Start with ambient lighting that mimics the warmth of early evening (even if you’re indoors), then add individual lights on your tables. As night falls, candlelight can transform your reception space — there’s nothing quite like seeing hundreds of small flames create a glow that simultaneously pulls the space together and also offers more secluded spaces within a larger gathering.

Bonus pro tip: Consider breaking from the standard single escort card table

No one loves the bottleneck of confusion and hungry people waiting to see where they’re sitting. Instead, try creating multiple smaller stations, perhaps organized alphabetically or by table numbers. This naturally disperses your guests and creates those smaller moments of conversation that make large celebrations feel more personal.

Table sizes matter more than you might think. While long tables can be striking, consider mixing in some rounds of varying sizes. This variety in table layouts helps break up the visual expanse of your reception space while creating natural conversation groups. (And as someone who frequently photographs these celebrations, I can tell you that this approach creates beautiful visual rhythm in your documentation.)

The key to maintaining intimacy with a large guest count often comes down to those thoughtful details that make each guest feel personally considered. Maybe it’s handwritten notes at place settings, or family photos integrated into your decor, or even just ensuring your seating arrangements create natural conversation groups among people with shared interests.

Remember — a larger celebration doesn’t have to feel impersonal. It’s about creating those smaller moments of connection within the grandeur of your overall celebration.
